Patients with schizophrenia are impaired when learning in the context of pursuing rewards.

چکیده
Recent findings suggest that patients with schizophrenia have a probabilistic learning impairment that is selective to learning from positive, relative to negative, feedback (Gold et al., 2012), and is more compromised in those with worse negative symptoms (Waltz et al., 2010). This is consistent with evidence linking motivational and affective symptoms of schizophrenia with dysfunctional signaling across neural systems in the dopamine-mediated reward network (Gold et al., 2008; Waltz et al., 2009; Maia and Frank, 2011). While prior studies have examined this selective learning impairment using tasks comprised of intermixed positive and negative trial types that collapse feedback and reward outcome together, an extension of this work would aim to isolate and examine the impact of motivational context. As such, we designed a task, presented in two separate Gain and Loss conditions, in which feedback was held constant, and the outcome was varied with respect to accumulating gains or avoiding losses. It was hypothesized that there would be an effect ofmotivational context, such that patients would perform better in the Loss condition despite identical types of feedback.

Motivational Context Modulates Prediction Error Response in Schizophrenia.
BACKGROUND Recent findings demonstrate that patients with schizophrenia are worse at learning to predict rewards than losses, suggesting that motivational context modulates learning in this disease. However, these findings derive from studies in patients treated with antipsychotic medications, D2 receptor antagonists that may interfere with the neural systems that underlie motivation and learni...
متن کاملNegative symptoms and the failure to represent the expected reward value of actions: behavioral and computational modeling evidence.
CONTEXT Negative symptoms are a core feature of schizophrenia, but their pathogenesis remains unclear. Negative symptoms are defined by the absence of normal function. However, there must be a productive mechanism that leads to this absence. OBJECTIVE To test a reinforcement learning account suggesting that negative symptoms result from a failure in the representation of the expected value of...
متن کاملReward processing in schizophrenia: a deficit in the representation of value.
Patients with schizophrenia demonstrate deficits in motivation and learning that suggest impairment in different aspects of the reward system. In this article, we present the results of 8 converging experiments that address subjective reward experience, the impact of rewards on decision making, and the role of rewards in guiding both rapid and long-term learning. All experiments compared the pe...
متن کاملExamining the process of social cognition in schizophrenia disorder
Individuals with schizophrenia show impaired social cognition, which manifests as hardships in identifying emotions, feeing attached to others, deducing people’s thoughts and reacting emotionally to others. These social cognitive impairments impede social connections and are strong determinants of the extent of impaired daily functioning in such individuals. Here, we review recent findings fr...
متن کاملComparing Copper Serum Level and Cognitive Functioning in Patients With Schizophrenia and Healthy Controls
Introduction: The altered serum profiles of several trace elements have been reported in Schizophrenia (SCZ). This study was designed to elucidate whether the serum levels of Copper (Cu) and Magnesium (Mg), the two essential trace elements which contribute to neurotransmitter transmission, are altered in patients with SCZ. We also investigated whether there is an interrelation between cognitive...
